Early Fall Goods

This is one of my favorite times of year.  The anticipation of college football season is also the first tick of cooler weather.  This summer has been really wet here in Atlanta, which has made the humidity pretty severe.  I know the heat isn’t over, but the lows are starting to creep into the 60s…which is a good sign.

This Fall, I’m leaning towards more primary, traditional looks rather than the bright and bold.  Navy blue, natural hues, and cool textures.  It’s not to say that your emerald green v-neck shouldn’t get any wear, but let’s make sure the basics are covered.  Here’s what has my attention for early Fall:

From top left:

1. Ball and Buck X Randolph Anglers Polarized Sunglasses:  Sporty and cool.  Wear these on the river or to the game.  Randolph knocks it out of the park, and Ball and Buck adds the icing.
2. Read Wall Tomas Mason Blue U-Stripe Oxford:  Very Trad, but updated with a spread collar.  It’s all about fabric and fit…these are the shirts that will last for years and years.  Staples.
3. Belstaff Quilted Vest:  In the quilted vest ecosystem, it’s tough to beat Belstaff.  Really tough.
4. Orvis Retro Flush Trucker Hat:  Replace that nasty lid you’ve sweat through with something a little more seasonally appropriate.
5. Matthias Kauppermann Herringbone Belt:  The dressed up version of a needlepoint belt.  I’ve been sporting mine for a few months, and get compliments all the time.  They work great with jeans of all shades, khakis, and shorts.  Take the plunge.
6. Gitman Vintage Overdye Oxford Shirt:  I’m a huge proponent of a navy blue oxford shirt.  They go great with everything except dark jeans.  Order a size/half neck size up and launder the shirt yourself.  It’ll look cooler after some patina.
7. L.B.M. 1911 Tan Blazer:  I have gotten to know L.B.M. 1911 via my guys at Miller Brothers, and really like what they’ve got going on.  GREAT price point, good fit off the rack, and a great, modern cut – without being too modern.  Oh, and YOOX has them on sale all the time.
8. Raleigh Denim Jones Pants:  More of a texture play here, These have a touch of linen, which will keep these in the rotation for most of the year.
9. Orvis Zip Neck Casting Shirt:  It’s literally impossible to have too many of these shirts.  They are great around the house, walking the dog, AND on the water.
10. Levi’s 501 CT Jeans:  I get questions all the time about tailoring 501s, which I highly recommend.  Levi’s has their CT version, which are essentially already tailored.  Good price point, especially if they work off the shelf.  Sometimes shortcuts are nice…
11. Patagonia Minimalist Wading Jacket:  Given that I’ve gotten into fishing, I need to get a rain jacket, but I don’t want it to be single-purpose.  I need to be able to wear it around town, etc., and not look like I just stepped out of Fish Hawk.  Patagonia rarely misses.
12. Barker Black Stitched Bone Suede Loafers:  A dressy version of penny loafers, and the stitched bone design?  Sign me up.  Immediately.
13. A New Panerai Strap:  I’ve fallen down on the job here.  I need to update more often, as new straps give your watch new life.  Since I’m leaning towards traditional this Fall, I’m looking at a dark brown racing strap.
14. Col. Littleton #28 Pocket Journal:  This has been my go-to utility wallet.  I carry a front pocket wallet, but need something to house checks, lists, stamps, bills, etc.  Post forthcoming…
15. Clarks Wallabees:  It’ll be hard to find a shoe that is more versatile and brings back more memories than the Wallabees.  How many Fraternity parties…concerts…late nights…etc. did these survive?

As someone who made this mistake, I would suggest the darker suede or beeswax Wallabees over the light suede which get filthy very easily

Disagree.  The patina of the natural suede builds character.  Plus, everyone knows to thoroughly coat the surface with Clark’s suede protector aerosol.  But RCS, here’s the real tip, go with the low top.

Yeah, I agree about going with the suede; the worn-in look is best. I also agree about going low-top; I have the high-tops and wish I would have gone with the others.

I’m a big fan of the 501 CTs. They fit perfectly on me without any tailoring needed. Got myself a white pair for under $20 for the summer too
