Old Orvis Bags

Another Ebay pro tip…

There is a huge market for vintage Filson pieces.  It’s like the patina increases the value, and the auction prices reflect that market.  Remember how popular the Filson Restoration releases were?  The pieces are incredible, and so were the prices…

Well. there’s a way to get around it.  Orvis has been selling their Battenkill line of bags and luggage for years.  They are the green canvas and leather Gokey bags.  The retail prices of these bags were a little less than Filson, and had a distinctive look all their own.  Here’s the difference: the older bags can be bought for a STEAL on Ebay.  They patina very well, and still have that rugged look; the anti-Tumi look.  I am constantly searching for these bags and have found some gems.  Here are three that I have my eye on:

First up, this Battenkill clam-esque suitcase that it the perfect carry on size.  The 22″ x 11″ x 15″ size is great for a flight.  The leather detailing is really cool, and it has just the right amount of patina.  The inside features all sorts of organization, and the price is $129 (or best offer(!)).  No shoulder strap, which gives it a classic look and feel.

How about this orange canvas fly rod bag?  It’s canvas with nylon handles, so it’s not the typical Gokey stuff, but it’s still super cool vintage.  Filson made these for a while, and they have finally brought it back, but at a 10X cost of this guy…It’s going to be hard for me to say ‘no’ to this one:

Finally, another Gokey option.  Orvis’ version of the Filson Outfitter bag, which as been discontinued.  The main compartment is pretty big, and the overall size of the bag meets the carry on requirements.  The cool part of this bag is the lower compartment.  It’s a place to separate what needs separating…keep your toiletry bag and an extra pair of loafers down there, and all your dirty clothes on the way home.  And at $149 (or best offer), it’s hard to beat.

Are you on board with the vintage Orvis luggage?  What are your ‘steals’?

I really like the Orvis line.  7 or 8 years ago I picked up a Battenkill classic duffle and leather/canvass overnight suitcase off of Craigslist at $75 for the pair.  They make a lot of luggage that is easier to wrangle through an airport now (including, I assume, the wheeled versions of many of these “classic” designs) but the vintage stuff is just so much cooler.

Would love to have that overnight bag.  Have several hokey bags I would be willing to trade or sale.

Hey. I got an Orvis bag at the thrift store for $2.50. I can’t identify it, can you help? A tag in it says December 2011. Also not interested in selling it. This is mine
