The Bob Weir Inseam

I am to the point where I wear what I like to wear.  Let’s call it my ‘style’.  Whatever.  It’s mine.  Whether it’s fashionable or not is irrelevant to me.

On the subject of shorts, I have always been rather vocal about the absurdity of any inseam longer than seven inches.  I don’t get it.  It looks weird, especially in some sort of plaid.  Shorts are supposed to be shorts – not cover half of your legs, or even come close to your knees.  I have recently 100% transitioned to what I like to call the “Bob Weir Inseam”:

Bob Weir was the rock and roll side of the Grateful Dead.  He played rhythm guitar and sang most of the band’s rock songs (as opposed to Jerry Garcia singing the more melodic tunes).  One thing about Bob Weir was his shorts.  Five inches max.  Maybe six.  That’s the way to roll. I recently had a closet purge, which resulted in a stacks of clothing going to the tailors for some tune ups and corrections.  Quite a few of these were specifically for shortening shorts and cutting off pants.  Five or six inches…that’s it.

To be honest, the Bob Weir Inseam makes you look taller, as well as making your legs look longer.

Now, wearing these shorts may not fit in with your normal mens section, but who cares?  It’s your style.  No one elses.  You don’t have to look like you stepped out of a J. Crew catalog.  It takes guts to wear these shorts, and quite frankly, if they don’t like it, give ’em one of these…say Bob sent you:

Bob was wearing some capris at the Americanarama tour dates with Dylan, MMJ and Wilco. I believe the correct term for the Bob Weir Inseam may be the “Historical Bob Weir Inseam.” Great post though – Weir is still awesome.

Bob even likes his longs short. They weren’t capris so much as rolled up pants legs. There’s a great video out there from some XM radio/fan appreciation show with Bob and Jackie Green recorded earlier this year. Talk about a guy who doesn’t give a….Bob’s salty in his old age. Someone asks Bob what he thinks about playing with Warren Haynes and his answer is along the lines of “He’s a great guy. Are you brain dead? Who keeps letting these people with dumb questions through?” Never liked Bobby all that much but he’s growing on me!

Weather getting hotter – shorts will have to keep getting shorter. Preach on brother.

…great post…I also would trip out that Bob would wear a “gasp” polo shirt on stage…

I understand not wanting them down to your knee, but those shorts are a little to short in my opinion…

The dude can rock, but those shorts ain’t rockin’. I remember my college roommate walking out of the dorm in Tuscaloosa with similar shorts on. He didn’t get more than 50 yards before the catcalls started. I was embarrassed for him. He was a jerk anyway.

I think this can work if–BIG if–the guy has great legs. Same for women and short shorts. Know what works for you, not what’s *shudder* “on trend.”
