The Eagle(s) Has Landed

As you all know, I do enjoy doing some thrifting every once in a while.  While most visits don’t yield any sort of return, some do.  Earlier this week, I had a very high yield return.  I was walking through the sports section, where I usually don’t see anything worth a second glance.  This time I saw the “Project X” logo on a golf club shaft, and it peaked my interest.  What came next was the find of the year (thus far):

Yep.  Three full sets of irons.  Titleist AP2s, Callaway Forged-Xs and Callaway Forged-X Tours.  3-PW.  Project X 5.5 Rifle shafts.  All is outstanding shape, roughly 85-90% of life left.  And the best part:

$12.91 a set.  I couldn’t believe it.  They all came home with me.

I’ve been playing my Mizuno MP-60s for a few years and love them, but have been getting the itch to replace them.  You know how it is, you are never satisfied with your golf equipment.  The irons I had my eye on were the Titleist AP2s, but I wasn’t very jazzed about spending $900 on a new set.  Problem solved.  I am going to get them regripped with the Golf Pride Masters-themed grips (I’m not a big fan of the stock Titleist grips).

Now, here is where I need your help.  I do need to upgrade my driver.  I have a few that I’m looking at, and would like your opinions:

1. Titleist 913 D2 – I’m leaning towards this one.

2. Ping G25 – Same for Ping.  I’ve hit a buddy’s Ping and really like feel.

3. Cleveland 588 Custom – Cleveland drivers have really come a long way in the last couple years.

So what do you think?  What’s good/what’s not?  I typically hit a relatively straight ball, with a slight draw.  Let’s hear it…

I’d go with the 913D2. It sets up and feels great.
I still play a 907D2. It’s an old driver but gets the job done. Can’t go wrong with Titleist.

My game isn’t strong enough to chime in on the driver decision, but I had to congratulate you on the find. I always make a pass through the sports equipment, and am yet to find anything to take home.

What a find, take them to a golf shop and make sure they check out, believe it or not there is a huge market for fake golf clubs.

Go hit all three as that’s really the only way to tell which one to get but I’ll go ahead and say that nothing performs like a Titleist, and the cleveland is also a really good option. I don’t know if you’ll like the Ping.

Awesome find on the irons. I need to start doing this more. I play the X-Forged irons and I love them.

Get the D2. I put one in my bag at the end of last summer and it started paying dividends immediately.

    The Ping is the play.

Head to Golfsmith or your club and get fit. Best thing I ever did was get fit for driver. I went in thinking I wanted one model after hitting it a couple of times from a buddy. However, the numbers on the trackman don’t lie. I ended up with a club I had never even thoguth about, Cobra Amp Cell. The Calloway X Hot was 2nd and the Ping was 3rd. I went in to buy the TaylorMade Robcketballz 2 and I hit it about 5th best after the Nike Covert. This was last summer. I have 2 different friends that just switched to the SLDR. They were long and straight before but the SLDR gave them even more distance with less effort.

Agree with Mark…get yourself fitted. And I too ended up with an Amp Cell. I would have never imagined I would have ended up with a Cobra driver after swinging Taylor Made all my life but I made the switch and had better control than ever before last year without sacrificing distance. Getting checked out on the computer will help you determine which driver gives you the best club head speed, launch angle, etc. The only problem was finding an Amp Cell in the shaft and color I wanted (went with the more neutral gray instead of orange, green, blue, etc.) but in the end it was all worth it.

    That find is unbelievable…

I worked at an ebay (buying reselling) golf store for years during my summer breaks. I never trusted hitting balls into the net, nor did I trust launch monitors. The best thing you can do is take clubs out to the range and give em a whirl.

I had been a Callaway/Nike tour-model driver player for about 6 years now. I took about 9 different 2013 drivers out this past summer to test one afternoon on the range, and even though it didn’t necessarily ‘feel’ the best, the Ping G20 outperformed any club I have ever hit. I am a low-handicapper, but I sort of realized don’t need to shape the ball off the tee – the G20 (as I am sure the G25 is) is the most forgiving club I have ever hit. Period. It’s a high launching head, though, so I have a 8.5 that launches like a 10.5 on any other brand.

I have the ping, and i am a 15 handy. It must be stated, i have only been playing fir 7 years. Ping is an exceptional company and they will take care of you. Also, they will fit you with all the new swag in a year or so. The Ping 25 is made for players that need a little forgiveness. Trust me, it is amazing. BTW, you have one of the best southern blogs. Keep it up. A GA fan living in AU.

    Respectfully,

I don’t wanna be the jerk here but I know that you’re dedicated to proper grammar. The word you’re looking for is piqued my interest, not “peaked.” Awesome find by the way… Jealously abounds.

Titleist all day long – just get the right shaft. Great blog by the way!

Incredible score. I always wonder the back story and how these clubs made their way to you. I’m jealous, I hope you enjoy them this year.

I’ll double your investment in those AP2s. Would obviously do more than that. If you’re interested let me know.

I have a Titleist 910D2 9.5, stiff, in great shape. I will trade for any one of those sets. Can’t see where this is a bad idea!

The original X-Tours are one of the best iron sets ever designed. On the driver front, go and treat yourself to a high-end fitting. Cool Clubs just opened a facility in Tucker, you should check it out.

Don’t buy a driver until you get a chance to hit the new Callaway Big Bertha’s. This is coming from a guy with a full set of Titliest clubs.

And when you do get ready to pull the trigger, be sure to check us out at gppgolf.com
