Part two of our ‘Summer Goods’ series. Let’s focus on leisure – specifically being by the water. Hopefully your toes are in the sand or your neck deep in a pool quite a bit this summer. Here are some choice items to make this season more enjoyable:
Tour Visors: I’ve professed my love for these ad nauseam. The classic style which quite a few call ‘outdated’ is perfect for those of us that ‘get it’. Just keep a grin on your face.
L-R
Tour Visor from Old South Clothers: New to the game; what a cool logo.
Texas Tour Visor from State Traditions: Quickly becoming the go-to place for these visors.
Red Tour Visor from Classic Georgia: It’ll be good and broken in by the time football season starts.
Coolers: I like to think that specific coolers should be used on an individual case basis. For some parties that rank high on the ‘rowdy’ scale – don’t bring an expensive cooler, because it will probably end up floating in the middle of the lake before dark. On the other hand, a day on the beach calls for a nice cooler, that will double as a seat for ‘new friends’.
L-R
Lifoam 50 quart Chuckwagon Styrofoam Cooler ($17): Disposable. For a reason.
Coleman 54 Quart Steel Belted Cooler ($160): The stainless steel is a nice touch.
Southern Point Co 50 Quart Yeti Cooler ($330): The Rolls Royce of coolers. This means business.
Beach Towels: Let’s not think to deeply here. They are towels. Usually discarded after the season or used to dry off the dog after a bath.
L-R
LL Bean Seaside Beach Towel: Again – anything with a dog makes the list.
Sunglasses Beach Towel: Shades. This has ‘I like to party’ written all over it.
Surfrider Stripe Beach Towel: Blue. Simple.
Chairs: I’m not one for dropping a bunch of money on a beach / pool chair. I like something inexpensive, and very portable. Special thanks to MW at A Continuous Lean for tipping me off to ‘Lawn Chair USA‘. We had quite a few of these growing up; I can’t tell you how many times I replaced the webbing. It’s an art – and science.
L-R
Packable Beach Chair: The key here is that it’s packable. Great for traveling.
Lawn Chair from Lawn Chair USA: The chair version. They weigh less than 4 lbs, so carrying these is no issue.
High Back Beach Chair from Lawn Chair USA: The beach version. Put this in a few inches of surf and waste away.
Reading Material: Educate yourself, but do it with something of interest. This is where ‘Beach Reads’ come into play.
L-R
‘Shoeless Joe’ by W.P. Kinsella: “If you build it, he will come.” Ten times better than the movie.
‘Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue’ by John Shelton Reed: This’ll put you in the mood for dinner.
‘Don’t Bend Over in the Garden, Granny, You Know Them Taters Got Eyes’ by Lewis Grizzard: Anything by Lewis Grizzard is 100% acceptable any time of the year.
Note: I didn’t mention koozies here, because I shouldn’t have to tell you where to find koozies. I’m sure you have a collection. Use them.
The largest of the YETI coolers are rarely used to their full potential. But when they are, good stories always follow…
Lands End has a really nice “backpack” beach chair. You can even get it monogrammed!
Love this series JRS… Summer in the south can be in a word HOT, and “Summer Goods” is a great addition to the season. Keep it coming, love the blog!
Gay.
This blog reeks of trying too hard, a southern point yeti cooler? Seriously?
Recommending what towels are cool?? This is a first. Bringing a towel to any party doesn’t say, “I like to party” it says, “I’m a p@#$@#”
Also, and most importantly — if you bring a styrofoam cooler to my marsh and “lose” it, leaving someone else to pick up after you — I’ll be pitching a 3 oz sinker through the hull of your boat as you go by.
Thats how we do it in SC.
I have always felt an instant kinship with you because of your love of coozies and tour visors.
I was lucky enough to add a Masters 2012 visor to the collection this year and am lining up my next target. Thinking it might be the Old South Clothiers one.
And my cooz-eum (what my wife calls my 250+ coozie collection) continues to grow.
i have four of your shirts and they are great. I also have two shorthairs one
Of which is Graytons twin. Best dogs on the planet. Where can i find window
Decals as displayed on your Range Rover? We hunt Ga and
Moss,
You are the definition of “tough and cool”
Justin hit the nail on the head. Moss, please tell us more how y’all pitch sinkers at boats up in SC. They must be real cool and tough there
Justin and Matt, no need to beat around the bush. I’ve finally asked the author of this blog the tough questions that you’ve been too afraid to ask.
Be sure to check out the newest post. Thanks to RedClay’s “paint by the numbers” approach to dressing fratty/southern we’ll have you and all of those trying-way-too-hard-to-be-something-they’re-not looking good for Georgia’s fall rush soon enough.
Spoiler alert: I don’t wear any brand name that isn’t preceded by the word “Southern;” and ironically made in China.
Also, cool beach towels and disposable coolers ARE mandatory at the better houses — the brother’s will immediately identify you as someone who “likes to party” (this meant you liked to do coke when I was in school but I’m sure you knew that as well; maybe someone should alert LL Bean that their towel is encouraging illicit drug use).
Best of luck, remember its not a lie if you believe it —
Moss I am not sure if I should continue arguing with you or just let you be due to your incompetence. Your lack of ability to grasp the concepts of how a blog works is frustrating. RCS is not talking about bringing towels and disposable coolers to house parties at your fraternity at your mid-tier directional college. I am sorry you came to this blog only looking for cool frat stuff to show your frah brah’s how fratty you are. Do us a favor and go back to tee eyeff eyemm where you can talk about how much of a southern gent you are with your fellow e-friends
You are more than correct that anything by Lewis Grizzrd is 100% acceptable at anytime. Its a shame Lewis didn’t live longer…
I remember finding Lewis Grizzard’s book, Chili Dogs Always Bark At Night, in my grandfathers book collection as a kid and after I finished it I spent the rest of the summer making trips to the local public library checking out other Grizzard books to read. Quality post.
