Dove season opens in Georgia on September 6th, and needless to say, I am really excited. It’ll be nice to get out and see some friends. We’ve celebrated the dove opener the same way…we all meet, have some BBQ, and head out to the field (where we hope they are flying like it’s Argentina). Gunpowder is burned, high amounts of sh!t is talked, and a good time is had by all.
In terms of hunting, there isn’t too much that goes into a dove shoot. Generally carried out in your field by a tractor or truck, you pick your spot near a fence, hay, or some other structure. Then you wait. Then you shoot. It’s also the first time any of us have shot a gun at something in quite a while, so there’s usually nice little flex…showing off all that new gear you’ve accumulated over the bass fishing months. I don’t have any problem with that…however, you’d better limit out or be ready for some ribbing.
Here’s how I do it:
From top left:
1. Randolph Sportsman Sunglasses: That sun is going to be shining, and pellets will be raining down. Prepare accordingly.
2. Vintage Cabelas Camo Backpack: This is the model that I use and love it. Cheaper than newer options, and built like a tank.
3. Duck Camp Dove Hat: Is there anyone doing better outdoor hats than Duck Camp?
4. Filson Twin Lakes Short Sleeve Camo Shirt: I love these shirts, and Filson’s entry to the market hit the nail on the head.
5. Duck Camp Canvas Gun Sleeve: Protect that gun on the way out to the field. Get a little patina going.
6. Tory Leather Shot Shell Belt: I’d assume you’ve got one of these…perfect for a dove shoot.
7. Cotton Tan Bandana: In case you need a little neck protection, or something to wipe the sweat away.
8. Turtlebox Ranger: I’ve gotten in the habit of bringing a speaker out with me to listen to college football. It’s a very quick way to make friends.
9. Woodley Bucket Bag: One of the coolest new options on the market. This is the perfect bag for shells – very easy access, and a quick cinch for packing away.
10. Marshwear Escape Pants: I can’t do shorts – the bugs eat me alive. I’ve taken to wearing these Escape pants from Marsh Wear – they are the perfect weight and do well with boots. Just right.
11. Russell Moccasin Joe’s PH Boots: It ain’t broke, no need to fix it. Super comfortable and they look sharp.
12. Yeti Water Bottle: Stay hydrated!
13. Masters Folding Chair: Same model I use every year. Folds up nicely and clips to a carabiner on my backpack.
What did I miss?
Filson is cool, but Poncho shirts for the win.
Like those bucket bags.
I use the Dive Bomb shell pouches since they are waterproof when duck hunting. They work well in the dove field too though. Also think you can four or five of the Dive Bomb shell bags for the price of one of those. Those waxed canvas ones are nice looking though.
Thanks!
Hi, do the Marsh wear Escape Pants breathe well? Also, do they make a swish sound when you walk? All nylon pants I have tried have made that sound. Thanks
