I feel like the shorts category has gotten pretty wide. No matter the variety, I go back to my comfort zone: flat front chino shorts. My friend Bill started Pennbilt a few years ago and has been offering shorts over the past couple of seasons. The success of his Club Shorts speaks for itself, as seen by the expanded selection of colors and inseams for 2025. The style of these shorts is on the dressier end of the spectrum. They work with loafers or camp mocs as much as they do with flip flops or golf shoes.
Personally, I love the way these shorts fit. They have a classic cut with a relatively standard rise. The flat front is the only way I go these days. The shorts are offered in a 9″ inseam, which I will have hemmed to my desired length (16″ outseam). Where these shorts set themselves apart is the fabric. It’s a 6.2 oz pima cotton with 4% stretch. They aren’t lightweight, but they aren’t thick. Good for the golf course or daily drivers. They are extremely soft, but still sturdy. The stretch is just right…
I got a khaki pair of Pennbilt shorts a couple of years ago, and they are still going strong. My typical routine with these is that I wear them probably 3-4-5 times before I wash them (unless they get dirty or a stain). I wash them in cold water, then put them in the dryer for ~5 minutes on low to steam out any major wrinkles. Then I lay them flat to finish drying. This minimizes shrinking and eliminates dryer scars.
Overall, these shorts are a great addition to a warm-weather lineup.
