It’s Homecoming weekend in Athens, folks. Vandy seems like the appropriate opponent, but it’s not about the game, it’s about showing all the undergrads that you are the toughest and coolest guy to ever initiate…even if it was 20 years ago. Regardless, this weekend is all about fitting in.
Back when you were roaming downtown, the uniform was pretty standard. Work boots, chinos, a plaid shirt, and a vest. The start of the night was pretty put together, but you transform into a hobo when grabbing a late-night slice. Go for the same look this weekend…and God bless the 3:30 kickoff:
From top left:
1. Brooks Brothers Plaid Shirt: Ideally in the home team colors, but not necessary. It shows that you have some sort of class, but not so much that it’ll be unbuttoned down to your dad-gut by 9:45PM.
2. Old Circle Hat from The Game: The one you wore back in the day saw some things. And there’s no way your wife let you keep it. You can find these every once in a while, and Homecoming is the time to let it fly.
3. Patagonia Retro Pile Vest: The same one you wore every night at Generals. Complete with a dozen burn marks from flailing Camel Lights.
4. Vuarnet Sunglasses: Croakies were actually popular the last time you wore these. Skip it this time around. Or don’t.
5. Duck Head Gold School Chinos: We never called them ‘chinos’. They were just pants.
6. Shotshell Belt: A rite of passage for any guy that trudged down Lumpkin.
7. Red Wing 1155 Work Boots: Solid chance that you still have yours from your time as an undergrad. The best there ever was.

Need an “intro to wearing boots” post for those of us who did not go KA and are a little anxious about the whole thing.
Damn, they still make Vaurnets? I hadn’t even thought about them in over thirty years.
No, no, no. Redwing 1178 is what you want. So much better than the 1155. If you want that kind of heel (I.e., the 1155 sloping heel), buy real cowboy boots with a leather stacked heel. Redwing 1178s are far more comfortable and look better.

Works like a charm
If this helps anyone, I just called BB to order this shirt and leaned that it comes only in one of their slim fits, called Regent, which they now call their “regular.” fit . They even label the Madison fit which, for newcomers, is slimmed down from their historical fit, “traditional relaxed.” A far cry from the BB of old when they had red tag and blue tag slim.
