I recently made the plunge on upgrading my ‘walking around’ Fuji Camera. I’d been shooting with an X-100T for YEARS, and loved it. It has seen a lot of miles: hunting trips, fishing trips, family vacations, etc. It’s a fixed-lens camera with a 35mm equivalent lens, so it’s a good middle 80%-er.
But one night I got into a deep dark research hole on the new X-E5. Deep down I knew I needed to upgrade, but didn’t prioritize it. The X-E5 is actually the perfect camera for me. Here’s why:
- It should disappear into my life: The X-E5 is compact enough to carry every day, so I’ll actually have it with me for when I need it.
- I don’t need 20 lenses: A simple three-lens kit (18mm, 23mm, and 35mm) covers nearly everything I photograph. I don’t want to feed a gear obsession.
- The 40-megapixel sensor is a serious upgrade: The resolution provides ample room to crop while producing images that look exceptional at home, as well as on the RCS platforms.
- It’s a camera I’ll still love five years from now: Rather than chasing the latest technology, the X-E5 emphasizes craftsmanship, simplicity, and a shooting experience that remains rewarding long after the next generation of cameras is released.
- It matches the Red Clay Soul aesthetic: Its timeless design and Fujifilm’s renowned color rendering naturally complement the warm, understated, editorial style that defines Red Clay Soul.
Here’s everything (minus the camera box):

Here’s what I got:
- Fujifilm X-E5: The camera. I got the package along with the 23mm lens, and it has been my walking-around lens. I’ve been messing around with it over the last month and have been MORE than happy. VERY worth it.
- SmallRig L-Shaped Grip: I did a bunch of research, and a lot of X-E5 users complained about gripping the camera (carrying around, whatever). I noticed it as well, and made this small investment. It makes a TON of difference with almost no bulk or weight. It came with the red compressor button. Added.
- Topo Designs Crux Key Clip: I have been using these for years. Topo doesn’t miss. I did have to replace the ring with something smaller, but it was an easy find in a junk drawer.
- Filson Small Field Bag: As if I need another Filson…but I wanted something that I could use as a carry bag for this camera and a couple of lenses. I’ve been using the Medium Field Bag with my X-T3 body and lenses, and have been happy – especially with the un-zippered top. I wanted otter green, but I got a GREAT deal on this new blue one from eBay.
- Peak Designs XS Camera Bag: I added this padded liner for some protection and some organization.
- SanDisk 128G SD Memory Card: I may try to do some movies, and wanted something a little more heavy-duty. So far so good.
- (New) TT Artisen 50mm F2.0 Lens: I got this one on a whim. At $79 I thought it was a measured risk.
- Fujifilm XF 35mm F1.4 Lens: I’ve had this for years, and plan on putting it to use with this camera.
On Deck:
- Voigtlander 18mm f/2.8: This should be good for wider shots and landscapes. Maybe Santa will bring it…
- Fujifilm X-T5: I’ll upgrade the body of my X-T3. A TON more features that I’ll enjoy. This is more than a ‘walking around’ camera…this one is serious business. Rumor has it Fuji is about to release the X-T6, which means the price of the 5 will drop…and I don’t need all the 6 stuff.
Here are the details of getting everything in its place:

More to come…
