RCS Gift Guide #2: NYC

Next up: heading into the big city…NYC.  Gifts for the guys that do the Black Tie thing often, or for the guys that wish they did it more than they do.  I like to think of a formal evening as an excuse to go all out:  Get a limo.  Pregame hard.  Be the first on the dance floor.  Have two desserts.  After party.  You get it.

Below are ‘things’ that go with a formal theme, but the main point of a black tie required night is to ensure that your date feels like Cinderella – without the midnight curfew.

From Top Left:

1. Sid Mashburn No. 3 Shawl Collar Tuxedo:  The classic penguin suit that never goes out of style.  A great investment once you’ve hit peak performance (read: body shape), and keep it forever.  And if you tear your pants breakdancing, Sid will make you another pair, and no one will be the wiser.
2. Ralph Lauren Purple Label Textured Silk Bow Tie:  You’ve got the smooth silk, so get a little texture.
3. Antique Sterling Silver Hip Flask:  Not that you NEED it, but these old flasks are so cool.  They are great for a post-game Uber ride to keep the party going.
4. Boglioli Velvet Dinner Jacket:  If you’re already set with the tuxedo, mix it up with a velvet dinner jacket.  I’ve been drooling over this one for quite some time, and will probably pull the trigger before we hit party season.
5. J. Crew Ludlow Premium Formal Shirt:  A great option for a formal shirt.  The pique bib is a great touch, and the price is just right.
6. Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso:  If you wear a watch with a tuxedo, wear the right watch.  This is the right watch.  Period.
7. Persol PO3235 Sunglasses:  Perfect shades in the perfect shade of black.
8. Vintage Gold Dunhill Lighter:  A fantastic accessory when getting all 007’ed up.  You never know…
9. Ralph Lauren Silk/Satin Cummerbund:  Invest well in tuxedo accessories.  It makes a big difference.
10. Sterling Silver Money Clip:  Obviously you aren’t carrying your wallet, so this one is a no-brainer.  The power move is to monogram it with something PG-13…some examples: HBTD, BIG, TUSH, XXX…  You get it.
11. Belgian Shoe Evening Loafers:  I get asked about formal shoes all the time, and it’s strange how few options there are…and the reason is because of these Belgians.  They are the PERFECT formal shoe for guys that don’t rent tuxedos.
12. Pantherella OTC Black Socks:  Might as well get the best.
13. Sterling Silver Fox Cufflinks:  Foxy…

What did I miss?

This is so good. Suitsupply made a velvet green evening jacket last year that was killer.

RCS, stick to your knitting. This is outside your bailiwick. As a long-term resident of NYC, this is just embarrassing. This savors of someone with no real living experience in the city.

Sorry for the late reply – I had a knot in my sewing machine. The point of the theme is that only – a theme. Not an accurate representation of residents. The list would look different if that were the case.

Does he actually think you believe people in NYC only wear tuxes with velvet dinner jackets at all times

Extremely weak comment here from Taylor Mack…nothing embarrassing about Jay’s picks or even the theme. It’s black tie season here in Manhattan my man. Get a life.

I agree – also no one actually uses the word ‘bailiwick’ in a real life conversation. I’ve been to New York, never had a night that would require this but like the idea. Good stuff IMO.

“{I, HL,] do not use words like ‘bailiwick’ in a real life conversation.” I do not doubt it, sir..

“I’ve been to New York.” Oh. Okay, then.

          “man, proud man,
Dress’d in a little brief authority,
Most ignorant of what he’s most assur’d”

I do applaud your spirited defense against a perceived slight to Mr. RCS. No offense was intended to him. He is, unquestionably, the definitive source on all matters related to the style and mores of the Deep,South. That is why I read him.
