RCS Gift Guide #4: Thomasville

Next up: one of my favorite towns – Thomasville, GA.  Some of the nicest people around, a GREAT downtown scene, and world-class quail hunting just on the outskirts.  For those that have been, they always go back, and for those that haven’t, I highly recommend a weekend visit.

The theme today is gifts for the quail hunter.  These folks are usually pretty easy to shop for, but they also have discerning tastes.  They like the good stuff…  Here are some ideas that’ll work well for the bird hunter:

From top left:

1. Tom Beckbe Strap Vest:  A updated classic, Beckbe really outdid themselves with this one.  And the orange waxed cotton is just the right shade.  Top of the heap.
2. Onward Reserve 1826 Field Jacket:  These lighter-weight jackets are perfect for early or late mornings in the field (when a heavy waxed coat isn’t needed).  They have plenty of pockets, are a good fit, and can be worn all over the place.
3. Smartwool PhD Merino Wool Socks:  The absolute best socks on the market.  At this point, they are all I wear when hunting, fishing, etc.  Over the Calf is a must for me, as they work perfectly with #11.
4. Colonel Littleton Fur Hat:  He’s got plenty of blaze caps, so why not upgrade his headwear with something a little more mature, and more traditional?
5. TSG Briar Britches:  I like that a lot of the new briar britches hitting the market are a bit more fitted than what we used to see.  The pants from TSG are leading the pack – that darker-facing canvas is a really cool contrast.
6. Orvis Mercury Stag Bird Knife:  You can never have too many knives…especially if they are for specific purposes.  The bird hook is so cool.
7. Mission Mercantile Shotgun Case:  Take care of the equipment in a safe and stylish way.  There’s always room for vintage camo.
8. Kingfisher Leatherworks Wingshooters Cartridge Bag:  Get this one personalized and he’ll use it for the rest of his life.  This bag is a heritage piece that will last generations.
9. Cotton Bandanas:  Because you always need orange, a stack of cotton bandanas is a great gift for the bird hunter.  Use them as a hat band, or some neck protection, and you are covered.  Just put these in the washer and dryer about ten times before using them.
10. Braeval Exventurer Shirt:  The BEST outdoor shirt on the market.  The Cotton/Wool blend is perfect for almost any temperature, and it’s built like a (stylish) tank.
11. Russell Moccasin Zephyr II Boots:  The best in the business.  Buy once, cry once.
12. Upland Game Print from New World Cartography:  A very handsome print to adorn any bird hunter’s office.  It’s a conversation starter.
13. Pelican Vault Takedown Case:  Has gun will travel.  Do it right.
14. Smathers & Branson Upland Needlepoint Belt:  This one snuck up on me, but I really like it.  Great scene belt that can be worn all year ’round.

What did I miss?
