(L-R starting at the top left)
1. Polo Ralph Lauren ‘Dunay’ Seersucker Shorts: Keep it cool – sure to be a magnet for cocktail sauce. Replace annually.
2. Patagonia Stand Up Shorts: ‘Coriander’ is the color; something different.
3. Victorinox Packable Volley Swim Trunks: Simple with a 6″ inseam. Not too short, not too long.
4. J. Crew 9″ Essential Chino Shorts: RCS recommendation as the best ‘classic’ chino shorts.
5. Murray’s Nantucket Red/Bluefish Embroidered Shorts: Fun. GTH.
6. Castaway Nobadeer Swim Suit: The color is ‘Beach Grass’ with embroidered sharks.
7. Orvis CFO Oxford Cloth Shorts: Any use of oxford cloth is good.
8. LL Bean 1912 Standard Fit Chino Shorts: Get a pair of navy shorts. You’ll wear them more than you think.
here's my modest summer list, on my modest blog.

Great list, shorter the inseam the better.
I need shorts pretty badly. I'll check out a few if these.
Agree with you on the navy shorts, you don't realize how often you go for them. With light colored shirts, you need something dark to anchor it and not make you look washed out.
Completely agree with the J.Crew 9" recommendation. They are a warm weather staple in my wardrobe. I'm going to look into some navys. I have a pair of Polo pink oxford cloth shorts, which I love to wear when it is particularly searing.
