Saturday was supposed to be an epic sports day. From my seat, it was not:
-
I’m officially over the Ryder Cup. Watching Team USA get boat-raced and barely look like they care is painful. Passion matters, and right now, it’s missing. Say what you will about the Bethpage crowd, but at least they’ll bring the fire — something this team desperately needs. More on that later.
-
As for college football, I can’t tell if South Carolina is good or if Kentucky is just bad.
-
Ole Miss flat-out wanted that game more, and it showed. Both squads are strong, but LSU’s quarterback play left plenty to be desired — and I’m sure he knows it.
- Georgia Tech is 5-0. Think about that for a minute.
-
Arkansas, I was pulling for you.
-
The Tennessee vs. Mississippi State game was a perfect snapshot of today’s college football. The SEC’s “worst” team took a very good Tennessee squad into overtime. There are no easy weeks anymore. Even the so-called bad teams aren’t nearly as bad as they used to be. Just imagine Knoxville this morning if UT had actually dropped that one.

Congrats to Alabama on the win, but let’s be real: Georgia handed them the game. The second half featured some of the worst offensive coaching I’ve seen under Kirby. A naked sweep to Cash Jones on 4th and 1 — when a field goal ties it? No pressure downfield, no creativity, just Bobo being Bobo. If you’re still surprised by his play-calling, I don’t know what to tell you. The fact that Bama didn’t score a single point in the second half makes it sting even more. They did what they needed to do, including taking advantage of UGA mistakes – on and off the field.
Now, after five weeks, the national conversation feels like it’s splitting in two: will people talk more about the Big Ten’s cupcake schedules and shiny undefeated records, or the SEC gauntlet, where teams beat each other to death and end up with two losses?
Yesterday’s picks: 2–3 (11–9 on the season).
I’d love to hear your thoughts…
Bobo’s play calling has never been my favorite (hello, toss sweep to the short side of the field). But our defense has got to be addressed priority 1. Yes Bama didn’t score in the second half, but they marched down the field, tearing up the secondary with IMPUNITY most of the firsthalf and the last drive, re: most important to win, of the game. Bama was what, 8 for 8 on third down conversions to start and finished like 15/19? Or something dumb like that. Last week, there is no way 44 points shouldn’t be enough to win in this league, even on the road…except when your defense gets torched for 44.
Like I said, not a huge fan of some of Bobo’s play calling.. but even if we had Monken back, no way we win a championship unless this defense (especially secondary, we stuffed the run well yesterday) gets right and fast.
Another great weekend of football. The only thing that could keep this shake up going is Tennessee beating Bama in a few weeks. And to your point, I’ll never understand why there’s so much hype on schools in other conferences who have easy opponents every weekend. Loving the great games this year.
This is the best September of college football in recent memory. Every T25 game has been up for grabs (almost). SEC conference is definitely a grind, and have also enjoyed some ACC games (I’m in heart of ACC basketball country). GaTech is the new ACC football darling, and I have to think they’ll be cracking T10 very soon- I can’t help but root for the Ramblin’ Wreck. If Vandy beats Bama and LSU, both are very possible, there’s no stopping them.
There’s no sec cupcakes. Arkansas just got their tail handed to them by notre dame? (Side note, after the Georgia/ND game last year, the jabbing is less amusing) Miss st. Close game with by a very good Tennessee team? Maybe so. I’m not sure Tennessee has been “very” good since they had Hendon Hooker. Remember their playoff game last year? We all know the sec is a damn good football conference but the constant “we have it so hard everyone else has it easy” is exhausting. Is Arkansas a cupcake or are they tough? Is miss state bad or did a a bad team just play well against Tennessee? Who knows. Also, espn hyping up Oregon vs Penn state? It’s been a pretty damn good game I feel like recently. CFB can be fun just as CFB and not the constant “sec vs everyone else” mindset.
Preach it brother
My personal takeaway from the weekend is that the Gators didn’t play, FSU and UGA lost, so it was great! I don’t know what to make of LSU and Ole Miss. I am leaning to Ole Miss as very good, and LSU as “fine.” My Gators stink and could have very easily won that LSU game if not for throwing 5 bad picks.
I can empathize with UGA and the offensive playcalling…we’re stuck with Napier doing the same thing over and over when it doesn’t work, and refusing to delegate the playcalling duties.
Ryder Cup was so frustrating…you could see that coming from a mile away. Not surprising that the US team made up the gap during singles play…they are a bunch of individuals; Europe plays like a true, selfless team.
