While it’s not blazing hot yet, a lot of pools are starting to open. My kids are significantly more excited about that than I am — but it did make me take stock of my swim trunk rotation.
I tend to prefer a 5″–6″ inseam with swim trunks (same goes for most of my shorts). It’s a clean length — tailored without being aggressive. I also like to keep a mix in the lineup: a little high style (Vilebrequin), a couple pairs with an excellent athletic fit (Onia, Birdwell), and some true utility options (Duck Camp, Patagonia). That way, I’ve got something for the beach club, something for active days with the boys, and something that can handle actual wear and tear.
Here’s what I like:

From top left:
1. Faherty Brand All Day Trunks (6″): Something colorful. Faherty has been making waves, and these are a good example.
2. OAS Waver Swim Trunks (5″): I got a pair of OAS down in St. Barth and love them. Great fit.
3. Patagonia Baggies Shorts (5″): The classics. Great for swimming, and just about everything else. By now you probably own a few pairs.
4. Duck Camp Scout Shorts (5″): The most cost-friendly option – these are great everyday shorts, and work at the pool/lake/beach.
5. Todd Snyder Seersucker Swim Trunks (5″): Lord, I love seersucker, especially as a swimsuit. These are great paired with a white polo for an upscale, white-burgundy-heavy lunch.
6. Duck Head Sailport Shorts (6″): Short of a vintage-y feel, these sailcloth swim shorts are a great look.
7. Vilebrequin Sea Urchin Swim Trunks (6″): When labels matter…in all seriousness, Vilebrequins are incredible.
8. Birdwell Beach Britches (5″): The classic surf trunks. Very cool. And unlined.
9. Onia Charles Trunks (5″): These have become my go-to over the last few years: great cut and the perfect length.
What did I miss?
