Pebble + Pine, the newest addition to Dallas’ Bishop Arts district, just opened its doors to the public. 20 year golf pro Nick Griffin and his wife Jennifer took the plunge to fill a niche – it was impossible to find good, stylish golf apparel and equipment that is made in the USA.
Taking advantage of the pro-domestic made movement, Pebble + Pine carry a wide array of golf-appropriate clothing and gifts. Shirts from Austin-based Criquet, Allen Edmonds golf shoes, Grown & Sewn pants from New York, Titleist golf equipment, Americana Dry Goods belts from the Carolinas, and BILLYKIRK bags and wallets from the careful hands of Amish craftsmen fill the space.
While it isn’t stuffed with products, what is on display feels like decorations. Old Try prints line the walls, giving it an authentic Texas feel. The store has a vintage country club feel – from the 19th hole perspective. Beer is available to all, as well as a couch and TV to catch up on the latest tournament. There is a putting green available for tuning your short game or placing some side bets.
Nick – a 20 year golf pro – is more than welcome to chat about anything you’d like – your swing, clubs of choice, or what’s cool to wear on (or off) the course. He was nice enough to sit down for a chat:
What inspired you to open Pebble+Pine? What inspired me to open Pebble +Pine was the growing number of Men’s specialty stores focusing on US made goods. Being a PGA golf professional and in the retail side of golf for so many years I felt they was a huge opportunity to promote these goods but with a golf slant. We carry not just golf equipment but other men’s goods from apothecary, bags and drink-ware that compliment a golfers lifestyle.
What did you do before opening the store? I have been a PGA Golf Professional for close 20 years now and most recently was a Head Golf Professional for a major golf management company. The location of Pebble+Pine will afford me the ability to still teach golf lessons at a local club along with giving me the chance to do what a love, playing a little golf.
How do you relate the sport of golf to men’s style? Its one of the few sports at a Professional level that you don’t have to wear a uniform and allows you the freedom to differentiate yourself and your character through clothing. Golfers are becoming more and more aware of how they look when they play golf. Golf has traditionally been a sport that has closely followed men’s fashion. The importance of comfort on the golf course has also made the importance of quality materials and fabrics at the forefront.
It’s very refreshing to see all USA-made goods at Pebble+Pine. Why do you think it’s important to carry domestically made goods? I feel as a country we should have a sense of pride in what we can manufacture. Above the obvious of supporting jobs and the economy I like my customers both at our shop and on line to be able to relate to the products we sell on a personal level. It has been a real joy searching for these American manufacturers.
Who are the golf style icons that would shop at Pebble+Pine? It seems most of the true golf style icons where around in the 40’s and 50’s. From Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and even earlier with Bobby Jones. Today guys like Adam Scott and Ryan Moore carry the torch. Its a great game in a sense that you see such a wide age group playing the game so fashion can also be all over the spectrum.
Pebble + Pine is a very refreshing golf experience. While it doesn’t require a membership, they make it feel like you are part of the club.
