It’s amazing how many questions I get about finding good 5″ chinos. There have been spotty options out there, but nothing has really ‘taken’. I prefer shorter inseams. They make me look taller.
Duck Head, who has been doing the Lord’s work in keeping the old-school Southern ‘prep’ thing going, released 5″ inseam shorts this Spring. And they are incredible – in both the colors you need (stone and khaki). The cut is just right…the legs aren’t as wide as 5″ Stand-Ups, which reduces risk. The shorts are 97″ cotton, so they don’t look shiny. From a cut perspective, it’s what you’ve come to know from Duck Head: traditional. Sizing is similar to regular Millar (I wear a 33 in Millar, and a 33 in Duck Head).
From a price point perspective, the $78/pair is in line with the segment, and digestible, especially considering the quality. Good stuff.
From a care perspective, wash these on cold, then dry for 5 minutes on low, then lay flat to finish drying. I don’t like to fully dry anything with stretch (even if it’s only 3%). This procedure will keep you from needing to iron or size up.

Is the material more like the Gold School chinos or more like the Field Canvas Five Pocket?
Gold school. Midweight cotton
