In Hand: The Baeron Waxed Vest from The Sporting Gent

I’ve been friends with the Sporting Gent crew since they opened their doors, and I cherish the relationship.  They are good people who are obsessed with outfitting dudes.  Shortly after opening, they embarked on creating their own labeled line, which has largely been successful.  They create quality products that are middle-80% with a lean towards outdoor/rugged philosophy.

New for this year: the Baeron Waxed Vest.  As soon as Marc showed me this one I knew it would shoot straight to the top of my vest rotation.  Here’s why:

  • First – it’s a lighter waxed vest.  What I mean by that is that it can be worn by us Southerners in more than just the freezing cold months.  It’s lined, but not overly so.
  • The fit is great. It’s slim but not fitted. It’s perfect over a flannel shirt and a light sweater (or just the flannel). I’m a 40R in most sport coats, and the Medium is great for me. There is a touch of stretch, which is fine. It doesn’t impact the integrity of the vest.
  • Pockets: I love my older quilted waxed vest, but it lacks the storage of the Baeron. Lots of pockets = less worry.
  • The collar is good—it stands on its own for those brisk mornings and doesn’t look dumb if it folds down.

The price point is great ($239), and it’s offered in three colors: Cigar (seen here), Oxbow Camo, and Rustic Olive.

This looks very good, but why does it need stretch? Why can’t these companies help themselves?

My theory is having 1-5% of stretch in something multiplied by however many produced is a good amount of $ saved for the company

Yeah agreed. Stretch in any percentage greatly reduces the life of a garment.

Definitely a money grab. How many sport shirts are out there that are >50% synthetic material and priced like a natural fiber shirt? They’re everywhere.

      Make it stop.

Not a fan of stretch or non-iron especially for higher price points.
