I’ve been on the Jack Donnelly bandwagon for almost as long as I remember. They create some of the greatest pants on the planet, and their owner/founder Greg is one of the coolest guys around. They recently released their first foray into the 5-pocket landscape and knocked it out of the park. Seriously.
The pants are constructed with 12 oz. canvas, which is heavy, but not too heavy. They are similar to wearing a pair of jeans – which is how I plan to treat these. They are cut with a slim silhouette and straight through the legs. I’m not sure I’d fit these over boots, as the cut is more for loafers, Chelseas, and Wallabees.
My plan with these is to wear them like jeans. My advice is to turn them inside out and wash them on a gentle cycle in cold water. They shrunk up just enough to be tight, but as anyone who has ever worn canvas knows, it’s going to stretch out by your second cup of coffee.
The price point is good for a USA-made garment, and it feels good supporting a small business. I recommend these…but they are made in small batches, so hurry…

How do these compare to Sid’s slim canvas 5 pockets in your opinion?
I like these pants a lot. I am little unsure I would like the fit. To me, based off looks, they look like carhartt pants. Which I like that, but if they are cut to be worn more with loafers or something, idk how much i’d actually wear them.
Again have to compliment RCS for the photography. I never wear jeans or any version of 5 pockets, i.e., jeans by another material., unless I am planning to ride a horse, perhaps, or going to a 50s party. The front pockets are rough-edged and always wear the skin off the back of my hands. I wear khakis and dress pants exclusively in true Southern preppy style. But every time I see a photo of jeans or jean-style on this blog it makes me want to try them again.. Alas, I won’t, but these again are some cool photos.
I felt the same way and resisted 5 pocket pants for years. It was either dress pants, khakis or khaki shorts unless I was doing something where only jeans made sense. I tried on a pair of Sid Mashburn 5 pockets one day just to see what the appeal was and I was blown away and bought three pairs right on the spot.
