I’m officially out of the Dad Bag phase—no more diapers, wipes, one million snacks, changes of clothes, etc. every time we leave the house. I’m happy to report that I’ve graduated to the tote. And not just any tote – a tote that mom will approve of, and is tough and cool enough for Dad.
I’ve found the answers: the fine folks at Topo Designs offer two of the best tote bags on the market: both the 33L Mountain Utility Tote and the 48L Mountain Gear Bag. They sent me a couple of their new colorways to show off, which are nice additions to the collection. These are both versatile and rugged companions designed to handle whatever your day (or kids) throws at you. And the price is unbelievable.
At first glance, the Topo toe bags strike a balance between classic 80s mountaineering/Topo Designs aesthetics and practical functionality. Crafted from 1000D recycled nylon, these bags are serious. The sturdy zippers and reinforced stitching remove any aspect of delicacy. These suckers can take a licking and keep on ticking.
While the “Mountain” in the name hints at its outdoor capabilities, the bags are just as at home in urban environments. The clean design and practical features make them a practical choice. And the colors are super fun.
The “Utility” in its name is well-earned. This bag boasts a thoughtful array of pockets and compartments designed to keep your essentials organized and easily accessible. The open top design (with hook closure) is smart and makes what’s inside easily accessible. There is one zip pocket on the outside, which is great for keys/wallet/knife/phone when hanging around the pool or the park.
The “Gear” bag is name is extremely appropriate. The bigger brother of the Utility tote, this one has ~45% more capacity, AND includes more internal and external features. First off, the zip top makes this an ideal carry-on on airplanes, or an overnighter that will ride comfortably in the back of a truck. The interior and external pockets are smart for water bottles, electronics, battery packs, etc. All are designed for easy accessibility.
The design also considers comfort and carry options. The secret sauce for both is the bottom design. These totes will stand on their own because the base is designed to support not only the weight of the bag, but everything in it. The Utility has two straps for carrying or shoulder carry, and straps that fit over a suitcase handle. The Gear Bag has two handles as well as a shoulder strap, making the extra weight a breeze.
Of course, no review is complete without considering the price point. These are NO-BRAINERS when it comes to the cost. The Mountain Utility Bag is only $99, and the Gear Bag is $149. Incredible value for bags that offer a durable and well-designed product, which should withstand years of use, resulting in a high ROI in the long run.
And they look cool.
These are actually pretty cool, and a good price point.
Topo Designs makes all around great products.
These look great – love that they stand on their own as well as the suitcase handle straps. Looks like a nice complement to our Orvis tote.
Tell ‘em you influenced at least one – ordered this AM 🙂
