Buy this album. Immediately. There isn’t a bad song. It has almost a ‘hollow’ sound, but the songs and the melodies are anything but. My Facebook feed and Spotify stalking column were all abuzz with songs from Jason Isbell’s ‘Southeastern.’ Drive By Truckers fans know what I’m talking about. Never on (or wanting to be on) the cutting edge (my relationship with Spotify is only three months old, and it has changed my life), I took my time getting to know the album. Look through my ‘Friday Jams’ and you’ll get my music tastes. Isbell’s release lines right up. You won’t be disappointed. Here’s a taste:
Look for this to win Album of the Year at this years Americana Music Festival.
“Alabama Pines” won song of the year at the 2012 festival
His last two releases, this and Live From Alabama, are great places to start with him. Live From Alabama acts as a greatest hits of sorts with him performing his best songs from when he was with the Drive-by Truckers as well as his solo/400 Unit stuff. Great recommendation, especially after your last post about “Real Country.”
I can’t get enough of this album. Also, your comment about Spotify intrigued me. I’ve been a premium subscriber for about 8 months and I has completely revamped my interest in modern music.
