I’m very excited about this one. I’ve been spending all year redoing my golf bag from top to bottom. Driver to putter. And with this delivery from TrueSpec, all the pieces are in place. I did woods, irons, a new Scotty, and now – finally – the wedges.
I used True Spec again, and it couldn’t have been a better experience. Shack was incredible and got me dialed in. It took about 100 swings, but we got the lofts, grinds, and shafts, spot on. I went with the Vokey SM9s, which are arguably the best wedges on the market. From a loft perspective, my new T100s irons are two degrees stronger on each, so I followed suit with these wedges to keep the ~4 degrees per club separation.
Being that TrueSpec offers customized stamping, I decided to get creative. Marrying my love for golf and The Grateful Dead, I’d like to introduce you to The Jams:
Each wedge is stamped with one of my favorite Dead transitions. It’s a bit of an IYKYK thing, but I love it, and look forward to hearing your thoughts. Some close-ups:
‘Estimated > Eyes’ – super heady. Right around 3o minutes all in, and worth every second. Estimated alone is a top three Dead song, but this one really hits. Check out the 11/29/79 version from Cleveland. It Rocks.
The wedge is a 58-degree, M grind, with 8 degrees of bounce. I typically use this club around the greens and out of bunkers. I rarely play this club outside of 50 yards, but can step on it if needed.
‘Scarlet > Fire’ – An incredible display of the unEarthly talent of the Grateful Dead. Both songs are great, but go together so well. The 5/8/77 version from the “Cornell” show is one of the cleanest transitions out there. Absolutely incredible.
The wedge is a 54-degree, S grind, with 10 degrees of bounce. My swing is considered a ‘sweeping’ swing, in that I don’t take a big divot. This is my go-to wedge, so the extra bounce and soft grind are fine and help me get the club through the ball – especially on full swings. This is my 100-yard carry club, but I’ll never hit it that far in play. This one is more about feel.
‘China > Rider’ – The most popular of all the Dead transitions (no one really likes Drums > Space). The jam is a really fun one to experience. There are some great 80s versions, but the definitive version is from 8/27/72 at the Old Renaissance Faire Grounds in Veneta, Oregon.
The wedge is a 48-degree, F grind, with 10 degrees of bounce. This is my 100-yard carry club. I’m really comfortable here – I play to this distance just so I can hit this shot. I play it a lot.
Again, I couldn’t be happier with the True Spec experience. They are a good group and really know what they are doing. I feel extremely confident in my setup, and can’t wait to get them in the bag. Speaking of which: next up – the official Red Clay Soul WITB…coming very soon.
Ahh no love for Drums>Space! It’s the one you are guaranteed to hear at every show! Very very cool thought. ⚡️🌹☠️ NFA
They look good, enjoy.
Yow! Absolute dream set of wedges. Easily the best use of customs stamps I’ve ever seen! High five. Check out 5/25/77, raucous second set.
What loft is your PW?
These look fantastic, love the grips as well. And, great club names; best I’ve seen since Neil Schuster’s (of Marist fame) putter/wedges homage to the ladies of the hit song “Freak a Leek” (e.g. Rhonda, Kiesha, etc.).
beautiful and amazing.
