PMGN – Old Frat

In the 90s and 00s, Fraternity style was all the rage, drawing inspiration from adventurous lifestyles and the laissez-faire attitude.  Whether mountain climbing, fishing, hunting…the melting pot set the direction for the rest of our post-grad lives. It’s funny how much of this still hits the rotation, years after graduating.  Ahh…the memories.

Given that Ole Miss is in Athens, and a nod to their epic Fraternity scene, let’s celebrate the style and enjoy the win vs. the Rebels on Saturday.  Downtown should be fun…

From top left:

1. Polo Oxford:  Load up on a few of these before the semester starts, and beat the absolute hell out of them.  Fully expect worn seams or collars before Spring Break.  They go with everything and take bleach very well.
2. Blue Lens Costa Del Mar Sunglasses:  It’s hard to see without them.  Even though the closest ocean is hundreds of miles from Baxter.
3. Circle Hat from The Game:  The only way to fly.  And the wear-in on these was epic.  Cut out the webbing and let her run.  The level of gross was immeasurable after these broke in.
4. Duck Head Gold Tag Chinos:  If you are going to wear chinos, go for the big gold tag.  Harkens back to the 80s…
5. Tory Leather Shot Shell Belt:  You’d run to Orvis on Peachtree and get yours during the first bye week.  It HAS to be the authentic shell…  By Senior year, it was broken in perfectly.
6. Vasque Sundowners (RIP):  These boots worked well hiking mountains all over Asia and South America, but that was nothing compared to four (or five) years on campus.
7. Patagonia Classic Retro X Vest:  Before Wall Street stole the style… get busy with the deep pile.
8. Cocktail Party T-Shirt:  Wear that t-shirt as an undershirt…the oxford may need a break.

Man…those were the days.

Solid rig. I was a Fall 2006 pledge at Auburn, and this is 100% on point. Brings me back. But if we’re honest, I’m still rocking several of these pieces almost 20 years later…

X2. Aughts frat culture doesn’t get its due. Pre-hazing crackdowns, smart phones, and social media

    There’s something in my eye.

I was just talking about the OG early nineties Sundowners last week. Man, I miss those boots. They took some break in time, but those things were the best. I still have my red UGA bar hat from the Game I got in 1990. I used to cut out the mesh backing out, as well, and then I would run it through the dish washer to break a new one in just right.

Being from Oxford, MS and going to LSU, this hit home. Not because most dudes at LSU dressed like this. They didn’t outside of the shotgun belt. I bought mine from Perlis in New Orleans. But I did wear T-snap Patagonias and Panic T-shirts and got hazed about being a tree hugging hippie constantly as a pledge.

The Game’s “bar hat” ruled the fraternity/college scene in the 90s/early 00s- would certainly add that to the list. Still too hot for boots, would sub suede Wallabees who have seen many a fraternity house basement/ front yard band party.

We were leaving my son’s soccer game yesterday to go to the Fall Festival at church. My wife and the mom of my son’s best friend were talking about what they were going to be for the trunk or treat. I just said I was a washed up frat daddy. That is exactly the way I dress.

Spot. Everything but the boots were part of the uniform when I was at UF. As noted above, sub wallabees and you have it.

Same basic uniform, late 80’s/early 90s UVA

    Oakley Frogskins for glasses

Change out the boots for a pair Sperry’s but with the lug sole.

Same grey t-shirt, but mine said “UVA Crew” on the front and the back “our wake, your funeral” Still one of the best slogan’s of all time.
