Scotty Cameron J.A.T. // Before & After

For me, putters are a lot like dating relationships. There’s usually more than one, they all have their own quirks, and we go through hot and cold phases — a few heartbreakers, a few bad dates, and every now and then, one that feels like “the one.”

While I’m not exactly the best putter in the world, I’ve made a real effort this year to change that. In my quest to become a sub-10 handicap (more on that later), I’ve realized that outside of driving, putting is the best place to shave strokes. So I’ve been paying attention — really paying attention — to what works for me.

What I’ve learned is pretty simple: I do not like a light putter. I like some heft, something that feels grounded. The Royal Grip Midsize is perfect for my stroke, giving me just the right balance of control and feedback. And a good sight line? Non-negotiable. Confidence over the ball starts there.

All those preferences led me to the Scotty Cameron J.A.T. Prototype — “Just A Thought.” I first spotted Keith Mitchell rolling one on the practice green down at Sea Island, and it was love at first sight. I went down the rabbit hole that night, tracked one down on eBay, and lucked out with a solid example from Japan in surprisingly good shape.

From the first few rounds, it was night and day. Lag putting — anything outside 15-20 feet — suddenly felt more controllable. Inside seven feet, it was like flipping a switch. I was so impressed that I ended up buying a second J.A.T., this one a little rougher but with good bones.

The original oil-can finish on these putters is gorgeous — deep, classic, and very “Scotty.” But it does require some love and maintenance before and after each round. I don’t mind a little TLC, but with the second putter, I wanted something a little more worry-free and a little more me.

So, I called my buddies at Putnam Putting — local craftsmen who’ve done great work for me in the past — and we got to work. Here’s what we did:

  • Added a Black Mist finish, keeping the original paint colors for that timeless look.
  • Introduced light milling across the face to give it a softer, more responsive feel at contact.
  • Cut it to 34 inches and finished it off with the Royal Grip Midsize to match my gamer.

The end result? Perfect. Subtle, clean, confident — everything I was hoping for. She’s got some presence in the bag and a little attitude at address.

The “new” J.A.T. is ready for her maiden voyage as soon as the weather cooperates. If the early rolls on the mat are any indication, she’s going to earn her keep quickly.

See below for the before-and-after — and yes, I’m calling this one the keeper (until something else steals my heart).

I have the exact same putter cut to 33. I have tried tons of others but keep coming back to it.
