The (British) Open 2016

Well, they teed off at the British Open this morning.  I call it the ‘British Open’, as it clearly distinguishes it from the US Open, but they call it ‘The Open’ across the pond.  I’m going to keep calling it that until I’m told not to.

This year they are back at Royal Troon, the one with the railroad tracks.  Great course, but a strange tournament.

I call this tournament strange simply because of the scheduling.  I love it when the alarm goes off at 5:30AM and get to turn on the coverage, but I hate it on Saturday and Sunday when there is NO MAJOR GOLF ON TV in the afternoon.  (We get to enjoy the Barbasol event on Sunday afternoon, which I’m sure will be riveting).  The courses are a little different, too.  Shotmaking is key.  It’s not a grip and rip environment.  And let’s not forget the weather.  The great equalizer.

We have some friends that went last year, and said it was an incredible experience.  I think I could be down for a trip over there to see it.  I don’t have much of a desire to go over and play, but we do love watching golf.

My predictions:

  • The winner will be within five strokes of par
  • The weather will be a factor
  • At least one top 10 golfer will go 80+ – 80+ and miss the cut
  • The winner won’t be in the last group on Sunday

I’m part of a Pick’em group, where scores of four golfers are combined for a final aggregate score.  Picks are based on tiers, and you can’t repeat.  I get one Tier 1, two Tier 2s, and an open.  Here are my picks:

Rory – Mainly because of his comments this week.  I like it when players are pissed off.
Sergio – He has such a great record over there.
Zach Johnson – He hits it straight and can putt.  And he’ll probably wear Oakley M-frames the entire time.
Scott Piercy – He finished #2 the last two weeks.

What do you think?  Who you got?
