The Grab: Vintage Ties

Goodwill hunting is as much about the hunt as it is about the find.  I’ve been frequenting second-hand establishments for years, and have it down to a science.  Mrs. RCS is quite the aficionado as well.  She has a keen eye for what’s good and what isn’t, as well as a sense for what deserves real estate in our respective closets.

One section that hasn’t gotten a lot of love over the last 5-6 years is the tie section.  During COVID, wearing ties became almost non-existent.  As athleisure took over, any sort of formality waved bye-bye…  But in my humble opinion, that wave has crested, and guys are dressing up again.  And thank the Lord…

Mrs. RCS spends a lot of time in affluent areas around our town for work appointments, and when there’s time, she’ll stop into Goodwill to see what treasures she can unearth.  While she’s very specific about what she likes, she finds some great things for me.  She asked me the other day about ties, and what to look for.  I told her:

  • 100% composed of natural fibers…preferably silk, wool, linen, or madras, or a blend.
  • Not fat, and not skinny.
  • No cartoons.
  • Clean and undamaged.

She recently came home with five that blew me away…I couldn’t be happier, and plan to add these to the rotation immediately…and at $3/each, it’s hard to argue.

The off white with texture is the low key winner, pink HS is my Easter + summer standard, served me well, good haul of classics.
