Winter weekends are interesting. The weather is completely unpredictable, and the idea of outdoor plans is always hit or miss. One minute it’s cold and gray, the next it’s sunny enough to tempt you outside. We usually fill the calendar with kid basketball games, early dinners or drinks with neighbors, and a handful of random errands that somehow take longer than expected.
Prepping for all of that comes down to layers. I don’t love leaving the house wrapped head-to-toe in athleisure, so I lean toward natural fibers and well-to-do fits instead. The goal is flexibility—pieces that work indoors and out, that look pulled together without feeling stiff. Lots of layers, good colors, and plenty of texture. Ready for whatever the day throws at you.
Here’s how I do it:

From top left:
1. Ledbury Flannel Shirt: I treated myself to the three custom shirts for a discount offer late last year, and got this flannel…and I love it. There’s something about a custom-cut flannel. It hits just right. and the look is perfect for a kid’s basketball game at the church or for a date night with Mrs. RCS.
2. Waterville Quilted Vest: I get that these are a bit of a splurge, but they fit extremely well and are just the right weight. The hues are appropriate and fun, and they hold up very well.
3. Randolph Engineering Aviators: The matte silver is so cool. Just right.
4. Clayton & Crume Kentucky Belt: The good ‘ole leather belt. Perfect for this time of year. I can’t get enough…
5. Tom Beckbe Piedmont Jacket: The go-to coat of armor against the elements…even here in Georgia. The waxed cotton isn’t too thick, and the cut isn’t boxy. It’s just right for a quail hunt or an afternoon running errands.
6. Levis 501s: Go-to jeans. Non-STF that are primed for the washing machine. The 8″ leg opening is just right for boots, and the non-stretch fabric is just what the doctor ordered.
7. Benchmade Bugout Knife: Never leave the house without a good knife. You’ll never know when you need it.
8. Russell Moccasin Zephyr Boots: Now that mine are good and broken in, they are my go-to. I love the look with jeans and chinos. Even around town, they perform as well or better than any other boots in my rotation. Worth every penny.
What are you sporting this time of year?
