1000 Words: My First Duck Hunt

I had the pleasure of my first duck hunt in mid-December.  I committed to go on the duck hunt roughly three weeks before.  Having never been on a duck hunt, I was really excited to get out there and see what all this water fowling is about…and I’m really glad I did.

This duck hunt is an annual trip hosted by a bunch of guys that I went to college with, but haven’t seen for years.  A good friend of mine got the invite, and invited me.  The hunt was a three-day ordeal with Semo Outfitters in Advance, Missouri.  The property has a well appointed lodge, and is covered with flooded corn, and a TON of ducks.  Shane runs a great outfit: the facilities and the hunting are outstanding.  We limited out on mallards every day.  I will be back.

I’m working on a ‘lessons learned’ post, but for now, here is the trip in pictures:

Glad to see you had a great time duck hunting. It’s refreshing to know new folks are getting involved in the tradition of waterfowling. Unfortunately we’re seeing a decline in the number of hunters, but with your help, and that of your blog, we can hopefully attract new hunters.

Great post!  Once you’ve had a taste of duck hunting, you’re hooked for life.  Much more of a challenge than quail, and more rewarding in my view.  I go out every chance I get!

Awesome! Welcome to an addiction from which you will find it hard to escape. Nothing beats the times spent in a duck blind with friends waiting on whistling wings. As Robert Ruark said “…if you have to be crazy to hunt ducks, I do not wish to be sane”

As a life long duck hunter, I am glad you are joining the sport! It’s a time honored tradition in the south and a great way to share the outdoors with friends and family. You being a gear guy, you will love duck hunting. The guns, calls, decoys, clothing, waders, and boats….and the weather conditions that eat them! Cheers to the next hunt!

Looks like a great spot.  I always have an internal debate whether duck or pheasant hunting is my favorite form of bird hunting.  Duck was my first exposure to bird hunting and is kind of like playing army for grown ups so I guess I tend to lean that way.  I think what really makes it my favorite is the challenge of it.  There is some luck involved with being where the birds are but the sense of satisfaction achieved when ducks are successfully called in over your decoys to be dropped is hard to beat.

The decline is there are no more ducks all caused by the commercial hunting clubs. This is a sport not a business. Thanks

Ross I totally agree except the sport of duck hunting has turned into how many limits can “we bang out” and how fast can we get it done, kinda sounds like market hunting to me but one of the problems I have is theirs no market to sale them, humm how many of the liver tasting duck get consumed?
