There’s a point every fall when the golf wardrobe finally starts to get interesting. The lightweight polos and shorts that carried us through the heat are still around, but they’re no longer doing all the work. Mornings are cooler, the sun sits a little lower, and playing eighteen suddenly requires some thought. This is when I start bringing out the layers: cotton or merino quarter-zips, lightweight vests, long-sleeve polos, five-pockets, and the occasional sweater when the temperature really cooperates. The key is keeping everything relatively light. A 48-degree first tee can easily turn into a 68-degree back nine, so whatever goes on needs to come off easily and fit into the golf bag without taking up half the thing.
More importantly, fall golf gives us permission to dress like golfers again. I like performance gear when the conditions demand it, but October is when the natural fibers, textures, and more traditional colors start making their way back into the rotation. I’m big on hunter green this year, along with Navy, olive, heather gray, tobacco, and a little burgundy; all look right against a golf course that’s starting to change colors. Add a good vest, a proper belt, and a pair of shoes, and we’re getting somewhere. Fall is already the best season to play golf: the weather is better, the courses are usually in great shape, and walking eighteen is about as good as it gets. We might as well dress accordingly:

From top left:
1. Peter Millar Cradle Pique Performance Quarter Zip: We all have a Perth or three…which are fantastic quarter zips. Don’t sleep on the pique look – better texture and some depth.
2. Holderness & Bourne Barrett Crewneck Sweater: Holderness has perfected the elevated on-course look without the price, with the ability to wear most of their catalog OFF the course as well. These new Barrett Merino wool sweaters are perfect examples.
3. B.Draddy Everyday Vest: Best vest on the market. And the new green…yep.
4. Gresham Reed Polo: I’ve been wearing Gresham Reed for some time now, and am a fanboy. Their pima cotton is extremely comfortable, and the collar is exactly what you want in a layering scenario. It stands up well under a crewneck or a quarter zip.
5. Greyson Troy Hoodie: Gotta have a hoodie, so why not get a good one? Greyson knocked it out of the park with the Troy: a pique fabric, great cut, and an even better price.
6. Zero Restriction Spinks Hybrid Jacket: That jacket you don’t mind wearing while playing.
7. Turtleson Avery Long Sleeve Polo: Turtleson has done a great job of offering performance pieces that don’t look like tech. The Avery is a GREAT example. It hits all the right notes.
8. Holderness & Bourne Wilson Pants: Just go ahead and order all three colors. They are that good. Note: they run a touch big. Size down if you are between.
9. Marshwear Clothing Long Haul Pants: Marshwear?? Yep. I have a couple pairs of these, and they are perfect for the course in the cooler/colder months. And at $99/pair? Perfection…
10. Jacob Hill Leather Grey Suede Alligator Belt: Sueded alligator might be my favorite look right now. And our friends at Jacob Hill have it figured out.
11. Footjoy Packard Premier Golf Shoes: These are what I wear. A lot. The new green fits the theme.
12. Nike Air Max 90 G Golf Shoes: So I’ve fought this look for some time, but I’ve become wiser in my old age. They are comfortable and provide about 80% of the traction needed. So if it’s a dry day, take these for a walk.
