So there is a blues bar near my place. While I’m not a blues aficionado by any means, I’ve been a fan for some time. After visiting frequently (live blues seven nights a week), my appreciation is on the rise. One artist that I’ve started listening to quite a bit is Junior Kimbrough. Yes, the Black Keys are fans too, but there is nothing like the original.
Junior Kimbrough is an extremely talented guitar player from the hill country of Mississippi. His sound is almost hypnotic – it’s a soundtrack to a late-night drive, or a what you hear when they serve bbq. I can’t get enough. I dare you to listen to any of these songs and not tap your feet and nod your head:
“Leave Her Alone”:

“Keep Your Hands Off Her”:

“All Night Long”:
How good is that?
If you like authentic blues, you really gotta check out Blues Hammer. They’re so great.
One of my all-time favorite blues musicians.
I’m with Ken, Junior is one of my all-time favorites. We really lost a great one when he passed. Junior used to run a Juke Joint where R.L. Burnside, another local resident, was a regular. Junior and R.L. were both on Fat Possum records & collaborated a lot, as well as the Black Keys. If you dig that hill country sound, look into R.L. and drift to another neighbor, the North Mississippi Allstars.
If you like blues, check out T-Model Ford and John Lee Hooker. And use Pandora, always finds cool blues stuff!
Would the blues bar mentioned in the article be Northside Tavern?
Just saw this, this week:
