High Five: Crown & Caliber

We’re going big with today’s High Five…picking out five of my favorite watches from the Crown & Caliber collection.  Atlanta’s Crown & Caliber is the online destination for luxury pre-owned watches.  They have an excellent process, an outstanding selection, and are a GREAT group of folks to handle your next watch buying experience.  I’m really excited to announce a partnership with Crown & Caliber – we’re going to be sharing their story soon.  For now, let’s do some online shopping…here are five watches that I’m High on:

1 A Lange & Sohne Lange 1:  Such a handsome and unique look.  Very sophisticated, yet understated.  The gold and black alligator make a classic combination.

2. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak:  You see the AP logo on a lot of PGA tour pro’s sleeves, and this is what it’s all about.  I saw Kuch wearing one last weekend, and it looks really sharp.  The lines are sleek and the face is bold.

~~~
3. Tudor Black Bay Blue:  I would argue that Tudor has one of the highest value propositions in the luxury watch market.  I’d give them a ‘buy’ rating if they were a stock.  Unique from their Rolex cousins, but as functional, and a more digestible price point.  Metal band is a must.
4. Breitling Navitimer:  While I typically go for understated watches, I have a soft spot for the Navitimers.  I don’t know what makes them stick out for me, but it works.  The gold and white is a nice combo.
5. IWC Portuguese Automatic 7-day:  IWC gets plenty of love here at RCS, and for good reason.  The Portuguese are such classic dress watches, with just the right amount of flare.  Very elegant, and very functional.
Extra credit: how about a little something for her?  Yeah, they’ve got those, too: she likes the Rolex Tiffany & Co. Oyster Perpetual.  Mrs. RCS is obsessed with vintage Rolex watches, and this all gold one is ‘everything’.
    Watch collecting is a great hobby for some, and a fashion play for others.  I’d research the provenance of any luxury piece I bought from any second-hand dealer whether its Crown & Caliber or Capetown Diamond, etc., Chrono24, or a private seller.  Pieces from AP, or IWC, Vacheron, Rolex, Omega, etc., depend on periodic maintenance to their delicate movements.  Knowing the service history of one of these is critical if you really care about more than the style or look.  I’d argue that Jubilee bracelet isn’t likely the original one for that Tiffany co-branded OP, but it could be.  I’m also not sure Tiffany co-branded anything but ladies DateJust models, which that obviously is not (looks like scratched acrylic crystal which pinpoints the ref. date).  Point is, research the watch by reference number to be sure you’re getting what you think you are getting, and then choose your sources very carefully.  I’m looking forward to more posts on Crown & Caliber!!
      Tiffany previously sold Rolex models with the Tiffany stamped dial across their entire range, Submariners, GMT Masters, Explorers, DateJust and DayDates. More recently the only brand they sell with Tiffany & Co branded dial is Patek Philippe.
    Man, I just do not get the watch community’s love for the AP Royal Oak, especially at its price. I get that its design was groundbreaking at the time (1970s), but objectively I feel like it’s just an ugly watch.
      I have to agree that the AP doesn’t look too hot
    Always wished you had more watch chatter on here about yours/readers collections or rotations. Nice group – everyone has their own style and likes. I love dive watches myself. Out of yours mentioned I do have a Tudor BBB in my rotation. I want to add the Burgundy one day. Just to add a comment also from previous ones, I too dislike the AP and the ALS – mainly for the fact if I am going to spend 25k on a watch, get a yellow gold rolex in whatever model you prefer.
      Yeah, for $25K, I’d rather have a yellow gold Submariner.
    Really like IWC and Tudor myself. Rolex? Of course!!! But I would’ve added Panerai to that mix. There’s something about their dials that I just can’t get enough of!!!!
