Here comes horse racing season…and as important as the horse races are the tailgates. Legendary. While this may not be Derby-appropriate, this will work for Steeplechase and The Cup. Also – this is for the gentleman who doesn’t mind staying away from the ‘Easter Egg’ look. Be bolder than that:
(L-R from top Left)
1. Southern Proper Hat: Even though this will probably stay in your back pocket, it’s good to have for if (when) it rains.
2. Cushing Bow Tie from Collared Greens: Let something else be the GTH – keep the bow free and easy.
3. Barbour Liddesdale Jacket: Again, for if (when) it rains, it’ll be good to have handy.
4. Ray Ban Avaitors: Go with the black frames; different than the norm, and she’ll want to borrow them.
5. Selvedge Blue Oxford Shirt from Todd Snyder: It is impossible to have too many blue oxford shirts.
6. SMU Embroidered Pants from Pennington & Bailes: Apparently there is a horse race at some point during the day…
7. Kentucky Horseman Belt: Get something good engraved: ‘Dixieland’, or ‘Bottoms Up’, or ‘RCS Sucks’.
8. 8″ Bean Boots from LL Bean: OK, it’s going to rain. It always does.
9. Knob Creek Bourbon: Be the most popular guy at your tailgate.
10. Heavy Duty Flask from Stanley: Sharing is caring.
Great choices!
Ha – just put 3 looks together for Trot Line, though mine had Easter egg elements. Couldn’t help it.
Those SMU pants look great in person, on the few guys in Dallas I have seen who dare to wear them!
I grew up going the conservative route with my dress for weekends at Keeneland. May have to try and liven it up with a hat or colored pants here in April.
Can’t forget the cigar, either!
Well would ya look at that! Hah! Were we all talking about Steeplechase last time we saw each other or something?
I think the obvious answer for belt engraving is “Tally Ho!”
Great suggestions! I am making the treck from DC down to Atlanta in a few weeks to attend Atlanta Steeplechase with a bunch of Atlanta friends. Will you and your lovely wife also be attending?
living in Lexington Kentucky has blessed me with the opportunity of having an amazing race track as a back yard. with that said, I would like to disagree with some of the clothing choices given here, the pants have to go, and I am a true believer in the idea that it is either a hat or sunglasses not both.
anyway, keep up the good work, I love reading the blog!

Ha! I went to SMU and wore those pants on the Boulevard every week. Great choice.
You can actually get the Kentucky Horse Belt for half that price at this site: http://www.kyhorse.com/store/gifts/belts.htm
