Vest season never really ends, but it does feel like it has an official beginning. Now that Labor Day is behind us, we’re headed for cooler mornings, earlier sunsets, and temperatures that finally start moving in the right direction. Cue the vests.
I like to keep a pretty healthy stable of them. If you ask Mrs. RCS, she’d probably use the word hoard, but I prefer to think of it as being prepared. A vest is one of those pieces I find myself reaching for constantly this time of year. It adds just enough warmth without committing to a jacket, and it’s easy to throw in the truck or golf bag when the temperature could go either way.
And there’s a vest for just about every situation. I like lightweight options for golf, quilted versions for cooler days, something a little dressier for the office, and more technical versions for hunting, fishing, or wearing under waders. They’re one of the most versatile pieces in a guy’s Fall wardrobe, which probably explains why I’ve accumulated so many.
The good news (and maybe the problem)vis that the options are almost overwhelming. Just about every brand makes a few, and they can start to look pretty similar after a while. But there are some that stand out, whether because of the fit, the fabric, the functionality, or simply because they look great.
Here are the vests I like heading into Fall:

1. Holderness & Bourne Boyd Vest: New to the lineup this season, and probably the best lightweight golf vest on the market.
2. B.Draddy Everyday Vest: My all-around favorite vest. Draddy crushes it here – the colors are just right, and the weight is perfect for 80% of situations you find yourself in. This is a great pull in a pro shop.
3. Peter Millar Parks Hybrid Vest: Not really a golf vest, but something a little dressier. Let’s call this a ‘loafer’ vest.
4. Moncler Quilted Down Shell Gilet: I know, Moncler. But if you’ve ever seen/touched/feel one then you get the hype. They cost a fortune new; however, some GREAT deals can be found on TRR or Ebay.
5. Turtleson Fusion II Vest: The more I wear Turtleson, the more I like it. Their Fusion II vest is as good as any quilted vest on the market, and at a very attractive price.
6. Waterville Quilted Vest: A dressy option…Miller Brothers introduced me to these a few years ago, and they have become my go-to for the office.
7. Kuiu Kenai Vest: More outdoor, but in the best way. GREAT fit and function. And cool colors (check out the camo options…).
8. Tom Beckbe Tucker Fleece Vest: Beckbe always offers a more subtle vest, and the Tucker is a great option. The leather accents are a nice nod to a more rugged, outdoor feel.
9. Patagonia Better Sweater: You all have one (or had one). If it ain’t broke..
10. Arc’teryx Atom Vest: EXTREMELY lightweight. A good option to keep packed in your hunting bag or fly pack for an extra layer.

12. Johnnie O Top Shelf Cashmere Vest: Yeah, cashmere. Such a cool option. Not for everyday, but for any day you want to knock it out of the park.
