PMGN: That Deep South Rivalry Game

There was a time when Georgia vs. Auburn felt like one of those games that could ruin an entire season. The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry had real teeth. Auburn was dangerous, Georgia was dangerous, and regardless of what either team had done leading up to kickoff, you knew things could get weird.

It doesn’t quite feel that way anymore.

Auburn has fallen off in recent years. The program that used to regularly find itself in the SEC and national championship conversation just hasn’t been the same. Meanwhile, Georgia is riding about as high as has ever been measured. Championships, recruiting, NFL Draft picks, expectations…it’s hard to remember a time when the Dawgs have operated from a stronger position. The gap between these two programs feels enormous right now.

But: it’s still Auburn.

There is too much history here to treat this like just another Saturday. Too many weird games, tipped passes, heartbreaking losses, and afternoons that didn’t go according to plan. Auburn would love absolutely nothing more than to make its season by ruining Georgia’s. And Georgia should take an equal amount of pleasure in reminding them exactly where things stand.

So go dark. Black, charcoal, maybe a little red, but nothing bright. There’s something about this game that calls for it. Auburn is coming to Athens, Georgia is sitting on top of the college football world, and there’s no reason to be overly friendly about any of it. Give me a black polo, dark pants, a comfortable pair of shoes, and maybe a little red somewhere to remind everyone who you’re pulling for. Clean, understated, and just intimidating enough.

Here’s how I’d do it:

From Top Left:

1. Criquet UGA Players Shirt:  Cool cotton and a subtle ‘G’.  The way the Grim Reaper intended.
2. Rolex GMT-Master:  A good evening watch for an early evening affair.
3. ’47 Brand UGA Clean Up Hat:  One of the coolest vintage UGA logos.  While I usually don’t wear black hats, this one hits.
4. Holderness & Bourne Wilson 5-Pocket Pants:  Keeping with the dark theme, Holderness did us a favor with this ‘Smoke’ variety.  Super comfortable cotton, cut just right, and washable.
5. Smathers & Branson UGA Belt: It ain’t broke…
6. Saucony Shadow 5000 Running Shoes:  Comfort + elevated style…these make it look like you’ve been here before…and that you are ready to GTFO after the big win.
