There has been quite a bit of talk about pre- ‘worn’, ‘destroyed’, and/or ‘broken in’. While I don’t have a huge problem with this, I do take issue with the mark-up. I’m a big J. Crew fan, but I can’t justify spending an extra $35 for ‘broken in’ Sperry Topsiders. Try buying a fresh pair and wearing them for a week. Same effect.
On the other side – Orvis has done a great job with their new ‘Surfwashed’ collection. The shirts and pants look great, come in a wide variety of colors, and they are very reasonably priced. Right now you can get two shirts for $59 (originally $39 each) and two pair of pants for $99 (originally $79 each).
Some examples:
Any FYI – Orvis shirts run a little big, so buy a size down. Example – if you wear a large in PRL, get a medium from Orvis. The pants do run true to size.
I recently visited an Orvis store to have a look at their "surfwashed pure cotton twill shorts" in blue for $59.00. I ultimately decided on a pair of the "CFO Collection Oxford Cloth shorts" in blue for an extra twenty dollars as they are more dressy. Is the quality of the fabric (oxford cloth) worth the extra twenty bucks or did I just fall for a marketing gimmick? Thanks.

Great post!
Just ordered a pair of the surfwashed blue chinos. And a pair in "bone" to get the discount.
Great post. I quite enjoy checking out your blog. You do a fantastic job with it. I hope you've been having a wonderful week.
Anon – Oxford Cloth pants/shorts are awesome. They get better with age.
RHW – Enjoy! Let me know what you think…
Skip / Keith – Thanks!
