Ahh…flannel season. As the temperature drops, it’s time to bring ’em out of hibernation. Some of the most versatile shirts out there, and a must for any man’s closet – even here in the South.
These are very easy late-Winter sale finds, off-season finds on Ebay or at your local Goodwill. I know that the textbook definition of ‘flannel’ is 100% cotton, but I don’t mind a little wool thrown in for good measure. I’ve found that the blend versions keep their shape a little better, and don’t wrinkle. Here is my collection:
First is a cotton/wool Viyella for an old men’s shop in NYC. Second is the staple Buffalo Plaid that every man should own, followed by an old Woolrich that reminds me of one my dad used to wear – it even has a flap on the front pocket. Forth is a solid gray all cotton Viyella – I’m a big proponent of solid flannel. Last is a cotton/wool Gant that I’ve talked about before.
I really like these in that you really can wear them with anything. Untucked with jeans or under a thin sweater and trousers. They are easy to wash – I wash them in cold and dry them for about five minutes – then hang to dry. I rarely iron them, but when I do I never use starch. I believe starched flannel shirts are a sin. Your significant other will never ‘borrow’ one that is starched.
‘Tis the flannel season, and there is some great stuff out there. Here are few I’ve had my eye on:
1. Penfield Chatham
2. Woolrich Oxbow
3. Patagonia Fjord
4. LL Bean Signature Belfast
5. Run of the Mill Navy Gingham
6. Vineyard Vines Northfield
The mercury is dropping; stay warm, folks.
Our Legacy make some of the best flannels out there. Bought the first one two years ago and it’s as soft as the day I bought it. I have three now.
I’m wearing my husbands Rugby flannel right now 🙂
Pretty hot collection you got there friend. I especially like the Viyella and solid gray.
Great post, JRS. Nothing better than a fall flannel.
MK is making some great stuff – it is turning into one of my favorite brands. Their pants have always been great but check this flannel shirt out: http://www.mountainkhakis.com/products/men/shirts-and-sweaters/ms-teton-flannel-shirt.cfm
